The Peace Free Will Baptist Church held their first organizational meeting in the home of Ronnie Bullman on May 8, 1975 in the Idlewood subdivision of the Cannons Campground Community. On May 15, 1975, we rented the Old Gospel Rescue Mission on W. Main St. in Spartanburg as a temporary church facility. On May 18, 1975, our first church service was held. We had 39 people present and our offering was $290.23. We voted to buy property in the Cannons Campground Community.
On June 29, 1975, we rented a mobile chapel from the Palmetto Conference and rented trailer space from Greene's Mobile Home Park in the Cannons Community. We soon needed more room, so on July 2, 1975, we voted to buy a metal building for additional classes. We soon outgrew the chapel and moved into the Cannons Ruritan Building beside the Cannons Elementary School. We moved the mobile chapel with us and used it for a Nursery and Children's Church.
On August 17, 1975, we voted to begin a bond program to build our new church. We voted to call Rev. Johnnie Bullman as our pastor and he would begin in September, 1975. We moved into our current facility in September, 1976. Our fellowship building was built in 1983. It was remodeled in January 2010 and renamed The Doris Bullman Fellowship Hall in memory of Doris Bullman, the mother of our church for 35 years.
We praise God for the leadership from our founder, Rev. Johnnie Bullman who pastored our church for 29 years. He led many of our members to the Lord and we are so thankful for his leadership and that of his wife, Doris Bullman.
We are thankful for our current pastor, Rev. Chuck Thornton who became our associate in 2003. After Rev. Bullman's promotion to glory, Preacher Chuck became our senior pastor. We praise the Lord for his leadership and faithfulness to our church family.
